The right path for the student applying to graduate school in abroad need to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Test. It is a global entrance exam for a post graduate degree i.e. Master’s degree in USA, Canada, and other countries. Apart from graduate schools, many business schools also accept Shorter GRE score and may convert it to equivalent GMAT scores, the generally accepted exam score for management courses. Students from various backgrounds and different countries take Shorter GRE, as it provides a common measure for comparing their qualifications. It is a standard measure for evaluating an applicant’s ability to cope with the curriculum.
There are two Shorter GRE exams:
1. General test
2. Subject test
Usually the students take Shorter GRE General test, which test the students Verbal, Maths and Analytical writing skills. It is unrelated to any specific undergraduate course. Whereas, the Shorter GRE Subject tests are offered in eight specific subject areas and attempt to measure a student’s performance in a subject in which they have majored at undergraduate level. Not every school requires a Shorter GRE subject test, but many of the most competitive programs do. ETS offers the tests three times a year.
- The only eligibility requirement for Shorter GRE is the document required to prove your identity. In India, you’ll need a valid passport. You’ll have to get your original passport (not photocopies) which clearly shows your full name, photograph and signature.
- No other documentation (like birth certificate, international driving license etc) can be used as an alternate identity proof. They are very strict about this.
- Apart from this eligibility requirement, ETS does not set any age, qualification, timing related pre-requisites. However, there will be a range of eligibility criteria set by universities that accept Shorter GRE scores. For each of their programs, they may have minimum age, experience and qualification related filters.
The Shorter GRE is a multi-stage test. This means that the computer will use your performance on one section to determine the difficulty level of the next section. Within a section, however, the question selection is static and you can skip around. If do very well on your first verbal section, for example, the second verbal section you will see will be much more difficult. This is a good thing, however, because you must get to and successfully tackle the hardest questions to get to the highest possible scores.
Shorter GRE is a computer adaptive test. Refer the below table:

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you need to register for the test and make an online payment. For registration. you have to visit the official Shorter GRE website and take the following steps:
- Fill the Shorter GRE application form.
- Make the payment via a valid credit, debit card or online net banking facility.
students who wish to enroll in a graduate school opt for Shorter GRE and those who want to attend business school take GMAT. Both the exams include a verbal and quantitative section.
Candidates can appear for the Shorter GRE General Test once every 21 days, up to five times within a year time.
Yes Shorter GRE is compulsory for admission in USA. For other countries like Canada, Australia and European countries, it is an optional exam.
Shorter GRE registration fee is US $228 i.e. INR 18,863.31/-
